The vast majority of industry product lines are made from steel, iron, brass, etc. and only a limited number of products use plastics or composites. Sure, these materials do not have the strength of steel, but they do not rust or corrode.

These materials can be quickly molded into "near-net-shape" parts. In many cases, it is possible to replace an existing metal part with a plastic. The automotive industry is a great example of the use of plastics to reduce weight, reduce part cost, integrate components to create fewer parts, and eliminate rust and corrosion.
